Process: Glazing: Glaze Recipes

These are some of the glazes that I use regularly, in a variety of kilns and with multiple clay bodies. Some are fairly close to the original recipes that I found or as they were given to me, others are my own concoctions or have been substantially modified to suit my needs.

I owe extensive thanks to Clary Illian, Kurt Weiser, Adam Smith and Pete Pinnell for their generosity, as well as the ceramics departments at the Univ. of Iowa, Arizona State and SIU Edwardsville. Every new apple has to fall from an old tree, and they were mine.

Note that I don't follow the standard "100% plus oxides" recipe format, so many of these add up to odd totals. If you prefer another format, just do the math the convert them. Either way, all ingredients are proportional and can be mixed in any total quantity.

Disclaimer: Use these glazes at your own risk. There is no guarantee they will work as described here under your conditions. Many glazes do not "travel" well, and these recipes may cause damage to your work and equipment if not approached with caution. As with any new glaze, you should test them thoroughly before use. Test, test, test. (Really.)
