The (old) St. Earth studio

The St. Earth studio is now located in Fillmore, Indiana (about an hour west of Indianapolis). The photos here are of my old studio at our house in Greencastle.

This was my first studio, starting in about summer 2000. Like most home studios, it was in the basement: a bit damp at times, and never quite enough space, but it suited most of my needs as a part-time potter.

I customized the space as much as possible by building in shelves and tables, and had additional storage for raw clay, bisqueware, finished pots and miscellaneous junk in other parts of the house.

Most of my claymaking and firing were done off-site, which means the primarily focus of the studio was making stuff; I spent most of my time at the wheel throwing and trimming, and generally assemble and decorate at the worktable shown above. Lots of lighting, clutter, wall decor and music are important parts of my studio environment.

On the left is the long view, including my trusty old Lockerbie kickwheel. This later moved outdoors, for warm-weather throwing. My primary wheel is the Leach treadle below.

And this was a great old garage building at our previous house in Greencastle, sadly torn down in the summer of 2001. It was a perfect space for building, claymaking, and storage.
